Abstract

BEZERRA, José Arimatea Barros  and  BASTOS, Tiago. A social-historical study on brochures featuring food and nutrition education (1938-1946). Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2016, vol.16, n.3, pp.144-172. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v16i3.718.

A social-historical study of brochures about food and nutrition education, which were published in Brazil between 1938 and 1946, is provided. Food, meals, feeding education and their relationship with social, political and educational ideas of the period are investigated. Since the above-mentioned brochures were diffusion strategies on feeding and nutrition knowledge current at that time, an analysis of four brochure copies was undertaken based on the theory of social action and depth hermeneutics. Results showed that the brochures featured interventionist, hygienic, eugenic and developmental purposes. The predominant idea was learning by doing. In other words, following the principles of the New School, one had to learn manners in eating by eating, even though practical instructions were based on traditional pedagogy principles.
