The article aims to analyse the relations between music, gymnastics and dance as taught in Brazilian Secondary School in the 19th century. The ‘Imperial Colégio Pedro II’ occupies a central place in the analysis, in view of its importance as an institution that was created to be a model of Secondary School in the country. The concept of the ‘Fine Arts’ that predominated until the end of the 19th century which also included music, gymnastics and dance, is fundamental for the discussions developed throughout the text. ‘Neighbourhood relations’, as defined by Andre Chervel in his researches on the History of school subjects, was central to the development of these articulations. This concept is essential to understand the importance of these subjects in the school curriculum.
