This text analyzes two collections of mathematics textbooks published between the 1960s and 1970s. It aims, from this analysis, to make intelligible how mathematics for the 1st. Degree, in view of the emergence of the eight-year school. In the analysis of these textbooks, theoretical-methodological tools from Cultural History, History of Education and History of Mathematics Education are used. The mobilization of the concept of ‘mathematics to teach’ stands out, an expression that designates the knowledge that is the object of work of the teacher who teaches mathematics. The results of the study point to processes and dynamics that are present in the official constitution of a new reference for teaching: the Curriculum Guides of the state of São Paulo.
