The western region of Santa Catarina, officially created in 1917, historically has been marked by the neglect of public authorities with the development of education. As a result, teaching mathematics in this region has faced many challenges, which motivated us to investigate the challenges faced by mathematics teachers between 1970 and 1990. Guided by Oral History, we interviewed teachers who worked in public schools at the time. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and textualized, constituting the basic-document of our study. As a result, we highlight challenges in mathematics education, profession, and teaching, which support a version of the teaching history in Santa Catarina.
