Abstract

SILVA, Régia Agostinho da. A mente, essa ninguém pode escravizar: Maria Firmina dos Reis e a escrita feita por mulheres no Maranhão. LTP [online]. 2011, vol.29, n.56, pp.11-19. ISSN 2317-0972.

The present article focuses on two works of Maria Firmina dos Reis: the novel Úrsula (1859) and the short story “The slave” (1887). In these writings, the author, who was born in São Luís, Maranhão, in 1825, discusses the relation between gentlemen and slaves, placing herself as a abolitionist voice in Maranhão as of the 19th century. The analysis of these two works has also considered the feminine authorship in Brazil throughout that period.

Keywords : Literature; History; Slavery; Feminine Writing.
