Abstract As institutions linked to the practice of reading, libraries are assumed in the popular imaginary as places controlled by methodical structures, by the silent, by the “mystery” (or the “forbidden”) and by a series of rules that, somehow, inhibit the freedom and the will on the not “initiated” readers, moving over those who, for any sort of reason, do not consider themselves as readers. Understand part of our cultural inheritance through the history of libraries is one of the possibilities to contemplate the circumstances in which the relations between readers and books in the contemporary Brazilian libraries are established, especially in the school libraries.
