This article aims to discuss the conceptions of reading which underlie the Brazilian primary education, emphasizing the potential impact of the difference between "literary text" and "non-literary text" on the reading practices promoted in different stages. It focuses on instructions and guidelines provided by official documents, in order to understand the role and the developments of other dichotomous relations that embrace this context, as it's been established between "teaching of Portuguese Language" and "teaching of Literature". This work aims, therefore, to develop a careful reflection about the practice of reading at schools, which doesn't mean finding a solution to the binarisms of education.
