Abstract

MACIEL, Carla Maria Ataíde. Woman, wife, housewife, educator: subsidies for a reflection on the Mozambican proverbs in the school context. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2015, n.39, pp.63-72. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/2318-1982-2015-v.39(04).

In this article, I identify and analyse cultural values portraid by proverbs of various ethnic groups from north, center, and south of Mozambique. I demonstrate that in both matrilineal and patrilineal societies circulate proverbs that value the woman in her traditional roles of spouse, housewife, mother, and child caretaker. There are also proverbs perpetuating gender stereotypes, because they express the dichotomy and complementarity between masculinity and femininity, determining the roles that men and women should play both in the field work and in the household. This knowledge will allow the use of proverbs in school textbooks of various disciplines and a critical reflection on cultural values represented in those proverbs. It will also allow teachers and students to be conscious about gender stereotypes that might prevent women from being effectively engaged in various activities that promote social and economic development of Mozambique.
