Abstract

BARRETO, Antónia et al. The school dropout facing the constraints of exclusion and the attraction for the world of work. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.43, pp.23-43. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/2318-1982-2016-v.21-n.43(02).

One of the main challenges of education in Portugal, from the 70's decade, was the construction of a school truly promoting inclusion and equal opportunities. However, many of these reformist drives came to be markedly compromised, or even alienated, in the absence of effectiveness and school fairness, unable to realize the individual and collective aspirations of a changing society. This article focuses on school dropout, experienced and lived by the youngsters that did not conclude the secondary education, centered in the content analysis of 30 interviews collected in a convenience sampling of those who returned to school to conclude their studies. The findings raise, in our research, two questions that open for the future: 1) can the current rigidity of the curriculum be compatible with school commitment to prepare individuals for life? And, 2) are the educational agents, conscious, committed and prepared for the provision of an educational service centered on the students, their needs, potential and aspirations?

Keywords : School role; inclusion; school dropout.
