This article is a historic conceptual development of ideas and activities from Anísio Teixeira concerning basic education in Brazil. With his great sense of balance and diversified culture, he gave an important democratic form on his way of administration. Facing many problems, Anísio Teixeira could prove that it´s possible to intervene at school, if and when, seriousness, ethic, resources and political will, deal to a real teaching sucess. His intention was not offer a new paradigm. It was to give qualification and autonomy to the teacher, focusing on the student´s possibilities, mixing intelectual and manual knowledge, art and science, behaviors and rationality. A free and secular public school, where the integral basic education would be privileged and could become a right for everybody and could, potentially, open the doors to autonomy, belonging and freedom.
