The purpose of the article is to check the meanings assumed by Federal Institutes of Vocational Education, Science and Technology in its expansion. The organization of the text is composed of two types of situations: socioeconomic and historical legislative. The first, from recent origin as in past decades, allows to check the key elements in the process of productive restructuring/reorganization and how this process has been affecting, metamorphosing and transforming the labor world and educational policies in Brazil. The second develops in the economic context in which it was carried out the implementation of Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology. The methodological procedure adopted in the text was historical-analytical, through bibliographical survey and documental descriptive research.
