Paulo Freire was Secretary for Education in the City of São Paulo (1989- 1991). He was committed to the construction of a popular and democratic public school with social quality. This text outlines curriculum management during the Freire administration, highlighting principles that underpinned concrete actions to ‘change the face of the school’. The methodology for the elaboration of this article is bibliographical research. In the end, the text emphasizes that policies and practices based on a freirean perspective continue to be a requirement to understand and overcome current challenges.
